It’s very rare for a modern retail chain to claim that they’ve been around for a while. It’s just not common for retailers to last that long; hence, it’s not a claim that you hear bandied about very often.
Here’s the thing. Not only have we lasted for 53 years, but our history as a store is traceable even further than that. We can go back almost a century, all the way back to 1931. Some of our principles, such as sending all of our sales reps to mattress school, can be traced specifically to ideas of effective leadership that were common in those days.
1931 was the year that Louis Acker opened up a mattress store in Brooklyn, New York. He hired his son, Harry Acker, to help him to run the store and mind the shop. Their history together is a relatively quiet one, lasting for 24 years. However, as Louis got older, there is no doubt that Harry would have taken more and more of the responsibility for running the store and making sure everything was up to par. This was where Harry learned to run a store.
Following his father’s death in 1955, Harry quietly opened up a shop of his own. This store, which first went into operation in 1957, is the origin of Sleepys. The history from there consists of an exciting series of acquisitions and expansions, but those are all relatively minor details. The point remains that we have been around a while, and it’s because we value you so much.
